Nevada to Oklahoma and Nebraska Trip
We recently had the opportunity to go visit family back in Oklahoma and Nebraska. This is the April/May frame time and you know that means tornadoes but we decided to go anyway.
Since our base home is in Southern Nevada we decided to start the trip from Las Vegas so our first stay was at the Sam's Town Casino KOA RV park. It was a short drive to the KOA and Lucy enjoyed the quick nap.
The next morning we left Las Vegas and began the trip to Oklahoma first. Heading east out of Las Vegas we crossed the Hoover Dam and once we hit I-40 East in Kingman Arizona it was a straight shot to Oklahoma.
Along the way we made many stops for a Lucy break and for fuel. The goal was to get in about 500 miles the first day and then take our time the next 2 days, it is about 1300 miles to our Oklahoma destination.
Driving along the I-40 through Arizona is a great drive. The scenery changes from the desert to the mountain pines as you get to Flagstaff, Arizona. The Duramax engine pulls the hills amazingly and at some points you climb to over 7000 feet in elevation. As you near Flagstaff you will see signs for the Grand Canyon National Park. If you get a chance to stop for a few days at the Park you will be rewarded with a fantastic RV park and the wonder of a national treasure.
Continuing east we passed many places we could have stopped, such as the Homolovi Ruins State Park and the Petrified Forest National Park, which we will eventually and give you a review
about those places.
Finally we crossed into New Mexico and a short time after passing through Gallup, New Mexico we were passing the Continental Divide. This put us close to our second nights destination which was just past Grants, New Mexico. Our stop was to be at the SkyCity Casino and RV park in New Mexico and we had never stayed there before.
A quick online check of SkyCity told us that if we had a casino players card we would get a discount on the RV site so our first stop was the casino. After getting our players card we headed to the RV park, just 500 ft from the casino and found it to be quite empty which we were happy about. The sites are very clean, full hookups and a very low nightly rate.
After a fun filled evening at the casino we were treated to the warm morning sun and were ready to continue on our way east.
